Charlotte Maxeke (1871–1939) was a South African activist, educator, and the first Black South African woman to graduate with a university degree. A leader in the fight for women's rights and racial equality, she founded the Bantu Women’s League, a forerunner of the ANC Women’s League. Maxeke was also a social reformer and one of the earliest advocates for African women’s empowerment in politics and education.
