Shirley Chisholm (1924–2005) was the first Black woman elected to the U.S. Congress in 1968 and the first Black woman to run for U.S. president in 1972. A champion for racial and gender equality, she fought for education, social justice, and workers' rights. Her motto was "Unbought and Unbossed," reflecting her independent spirit and dedication to change.
