Opal Lee (born 1926) is an American activist known as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth.” She led the movement to make Juneteenth a U.S. federal holiday, which was achieved in 2021. A lifelong advocate for civil rights, education, and social justice, she continues to fight for equality and awareness of Black history.
